How To Re-Use Baby Formula Cans: Q-Tip Holder

Personalize Your Bathroom With This DIY Tutorial!

After months of throwing away empty formula cans and even more months of trying to come up with inexpensive home design ideas, I decided to start cleaning them out and storing them under my kitchen sink. Why? -- is what my husband would ask each time he had to barrel through them to reach for -- well, whatever it is he stores under there. Needless to say, I had no idea what I was going to do with them. Then, I realized that storing a box of Q-tips on my bathroom counter wasn't exactly what my idea of trendy. So what if I could make something a little more chic to store them in? I hadn't found a single decoration to tie together the many colors I threw together in hopes to pass it all off as Navy-themed. Well, guys, today I share with you the first product of my newly discovered love of up-cycling formula cans. Have fun!

What You Will Need:
One baby formula can with lid
One extra lid, circle-shaped cardboard or anything for reinforcement (for the lid of your can)
About 1-1 1/2 feet of fabric
Fabric scissors
Hot glue gun and two or three sticks of hot glue and/or needle and thread
About 6 inches of clothes line, rope or yarn
Decorative sea shells or any embellishments
Fabric measuring tape

Now Let's Begin!
I mentioned in the materials list that you will need a hot glue gun and needle and thread. For this project, I used only hot glue to attach the fabric and sea shells. You may use a needle and thread to hem the fabric before attaching it to the can. However, you will still need to use the hot glue gun to apply the fabric and embellishments.

1. Clean out the can. It is best not to submerge in a sink full of soap and water, but instead wipe the inside with any household cleaner (Mr. Clean with Gain, Lysol, etc.) and wipe dry to prevent rusting later on. Peel off the label to the best of your ability and wipe the outside clean as well.

2. Gather all the supplies needed and keep them in one place. This will make the process much easier, as you are not scouring the house in search of everything.

3. Start with examining the can and getting a feel of how you will need to handle it when applying the fabric. Come up with your design concept if you haven't already.

4. Measure the diameter and length of the can and cut your fabric respectively. *If you are sewing your facbric, be sure to leave 1/2 inch to 1 inch to account for your hem.*

5. Grasp the can at a comfortable angle and apply a thick line of hot glue. Attach the fabric quickly and hold in place for about five seconds. Repeat this process until you have wrapped all of your material around the can, concealing the silver completely. I wanted extra fabric to make a small roll to attach my sea shells, so I rolled the excess material and glued it in place. *If sewing, begin this process after you have cut and sewn your material.*
6. If you had extra fabric, reinforce with extra hot glue and roll it in place as depicted in picture 6.

7. You will need one of your formula can lids for this. Apply glue to the bottom of the can as well as the inside of the lid. Place on the BOTTOM of your can, leaving the top open. This step is not required, but I recommend it if you will be putting your can in any place where it will be exposed to moisture. The cans are  not meant to be wet for prolonged periods of time, and will rust if not dried quickly. Placing a lid on the bottom prevents moisture from seeping into the aluminum.

8. Using hot glue, attach your embellishments to anywhere on your can. Get creative, but make sure that they are secured onto the material.

 9. Here, you will need your extra formula can lid. You can use anything that will withstand a little wear and tear -- it does not have to be a lid. It will be covered with fabric and used for the lid of your q-tip holder. Mark the center. This will be where you will put your handle.

10. Cut out a small square from your fabric. You will need a little more than the size of the lid because you will be wrapping it around and covering it completely.

11. I used a bowl to help me gauge about how much extra fabric I will need to cover the lid. The bowl was about 2 1/2 centimeters bigger than the lid, which was enough for me to work with.

12. Cut out all the excess fabric so you are left with just the amount needed.

13. Cut a hole where you marked the center of the lid. Mark and cut a hole in the center of your fabric and place the lid in the middle of your cutout.

14. Cut about three or four small slits on the outside of your fabric cutout. Cutting the slits will give you a little yield in the fabric and to ensure that you are not bunching it too much together when you wrap it around.

15. As you wrap the fabric around the lid, glue in place and hold for several seconds. Next, take your rope or yarn and meet the ends. Push them through the hole on the top of the lid and make two knots underneath to hold in place.

Put your new q-tip holder in your bathroom and snap a picture of your finished look!
